WHAT IS A COMMISSIONER FOR OATHS?
A Commissioner for Oaths is appointed by the Deputy Minister of Justice for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to administer oaths, take and receive affidavits, declarations and affirmations. Once an oath or affirmation is made before the Commissioner for Oaths, the declarant (you) must sign the affidavit in the presence of the Commissioner for Oaths who will then stamp and sign the affidavit. The affidavit then becomes a legal document for use in court or when required for other legal reason. A Commissioner for Oaths; however, does not offer legal advice or certify the truth or validity of the information being declared as it is the declarant that does so though the oath or affirmation.
It is important to note that declarants must appear before the Commissioner for Oaths (by appointment in our St. John's office, your home or another suitable location) and must present a valid photo identification (driver’s license, current passport, provincial ID, etc.) or any other valid government issued photo identification.
